1. What Year and Model is your car? How many miles?
It is a 1978 Trans Am Y88 with 86500 miles on it.
2. What was it that made you choose that model Pontiac?
When I was in elementary school my summer babysitter had a boyfriend that had either a 77 or 78 brown TA with t-tops. It had a camel interior with the cloth seats. I only got to ride in the car a couple times but I was hooked. Every time I saw that car come around the corner I would stop and stare.
3. How long have you owned your car?
I have owned this car for 1 year.
4. Where and how did you find your car?
A good friend found it the same day I settled on a car I really didn't want. I sold that car and convinced my friend to sell. The car came out of Clearwater Florida where it was delivered new to Harris Pontiac in Clearwater. It now lives in West Georgia.
5. Is your car stock, restored, modified, or in between? If restored, tell
us about the restoration. If modified, what “mods” have been done?
The car is stock. Over the spring I sent the car to the same friend that sold it to me. He cut out all the rust in the car and put in new metal except for the lower quarter. That piece came off a donor car so mine would have the factory contour and also so it could have the factory spot welds. The motor and trans were pulled, resealed and received all new hoses, vacuum lines, water pump, fuel pump, oil pump, timing chain, cam and valve job. The motor ran good before, it runs so much better now.
6. Do you have any future plans for your car?
Yes. Seat covers, dash cap and door panels are next. Then the car will be painted and a decal kit put on. I'm struggling with the idea of putting 17in Year One snowflakes on it. I'll cross that bridge when I get there. After that is done who knows.
7. Do you attend shows/events/races with your car? Are you a member of any
I try to go to as many cruise ins as possible. I like to hit the local shows if they are reasonable or for a good cause. I did the Power Tour this year with my son and had a blast. All in all I put 715 miles on the car. I wouldn't trade that experience for the world. I'm a Allgencamaros member and Allgentransams member.
8. How many miles a year do you put on your car?
So far in the year I've owned the car I have racked up 1300 miles. It has never let me down. I'm always nervous behind the wheel of one of these old cars and they prove to me each time they are reliable. Just because they are simple does not make them less reliable.
9. Have you won anything with your car you're especially proud of?
I got a Reunion award at the 15th Fbody Gathering this past May. Did not expect that at all seeing that the car has a long way to go.
10. What's your fondest memory in/with your car?
I have two. Going to see the car for the first time with my son. Having him look over it just as hard as I did. The second was the Power Tour. We had a great time and seeing my son get involved and talk with other car owners about their cars makes me feel good about him and his chances of becoming a car guy like dad.
